The Kolkata Mail correspondent Priyanka Dutta caught up with the director of upcoming short film One Night Stand, Indranil Banerjee over an exclusive chat about his film. Excerpts..

The name One Night Stand makes people think about various things. How did you come up with the idea of One Night Stand?

Indranil Banerjee- Basically at Unity Pictures, we believe in doing something that others have not done yet. We believe in the motto-Expect the unexpected. The things that the audience think about this film will not be the same once they see the film. So many kinds of thrillers are now made in the film industry. Likewise, it occurred to me once day and I began to write it down. We have never believed in competing with others. We work with the basic equipments. Even we do not do much make-up on the actors. We keep things simple but let the work do the talking.

Why did you conduct grooming sessions for this film?

Indranil Banerjee- Well, the film is in English as we are targeting international audience. So we conducted sessions to work on the English. It is not that we required the actors to speak English with an accent. But we needed to focus on the fact how the Bengali Christians will speak, the pronunciation and the dressing. Also we focussed on the expressions bit. I am a huge fan of natural acting. So whenever I found that the acting was a bit loud, I had to tone it down. So to cope with these facts, the sessions were conducted for this film.

You work with limited equipments. So tell us something about the shooting experiences with regards to selection of the locations?

Indranil Banerjee- I am thankful to two people- Debasmita Chakraborty and Rajib Biswas. They do not ask us why we need to shoot at their houses for our films. They have been extremely co-operative and I am thankful to them for their help. So we do not face troubles while shooting the films. We faced problems during our initial days when we were not so acquainted with the various permissions that we needed to take to shoot at a place. But now we are well prepared.

Since this is a thriller, music plays an important part. Tell us something about the music of the film.

Indranil Banerjee- Well, I compose the music of my film and I pay special attention to it. I had thought about using the piano and other instruments, but I found out that they have been used before. So I used different new techniques to make the music of this film. I have used a violin of my sister, a string of which is misplaced. I have put water on a plate and the sound that it makes is extremely thrilling. The audience may talk about acting or camerawork, but I don’t think they will complain about the music. However if they don’t like it, they are free to state their opinions.

Do you think international recognition is necessary to get yourself recognized in your own country?

Indranil Banerjee- Well, yes it is true that one needs to be recognized internationally to get recognition in their home town. As a result of getting applauded in the world, one will get to catch the eyes of more people. We have people wanting to collaborate with us on our other projects. This has happened simply because of the promotion that the other films have got due to being recognized at other film festivals.

As a filmmaker, you must have some expectations from your film.

Indranil Banerjee- The chill is setting in and I just hope that the audiences love this thriller. Bengalis have a penchant for thrillers and this will satisfy them completely. Be prepared to expect the unexpected from the short film One Night Stand.

Best of luck Indranil for One Night Stand.
