COVID-19 Returns: What Essential Steps One Must Take?

As COVID-19 cases show a mild resurgence in parts of India, healthcare experts in Kolkata are advising residents to adopt basic preventive measures not in response to any local outbreak, but as a proactive step during the ongoing viral season. While no COVID-19 cases have been recently reported in the city, doctors are encouraging the public to remain mindful and take simple precautions to reduce the risk of infection.
While the overall caseload in India remains low, health experts caution against complacency, especially in urban centres like Kolkata. The return of COVID-19 is being closely watched by medical professionals, especially given the tendency of most people to have relaxed all pandemic-era precautions.
With Kolkata’s dense population, bustling markets, and frequent social gatherings, the city remains vulnerable to the rapid spread of infections. While the fear and uncertainty of the early pandemic days have faded, doctors stress that COVID-19 has not disappeared; it has merely become part of the broader viral ecosystem. The Ministry of Health has confirmed that the current rise in cases across some states is limited and under control. In line with this national outlook, medical professionals in Kolkata are viewing the situation as part of the usual seasonal trend of respiratory infections, rather than as a public health concern.
Dr. Sandeep Jain, Associate Consultant at Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Howrah, said, “It is important to remember the usual steps we used to follow during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Simple practices such as maintaining proper hand hygiene, wearing a mask in crowded areas, and keeping a reasonable distance from others can go a long way in preventing infection. If anyone experiences symptoms of viral fever, they should isolate themselves and seek urgent medical advice. Testing for COVID-19 should be done when recommended by a physician, and one must avoid stepping out unless it’s necessary. Above all, following government and WHO guidelines when they are made available remains essential in keeping ourselves and others safe.”
The cases occurring are generally manageable and do not currently pose any burden on hospitals. However, healthcare professionals advise that individuals, especially the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, should be a little more mindful.
Vaccination, especially booster doses for eligible individuals, continues to be an important line of defence. Although there is no indication of a major outbreak, maintaining vaccine protection adds an extra layer of safety, particularly in a time when multiple viruses tend to circulate.
As life continues at its usual pace in Kolkata, with schools, offices, and public events fully operational, health experts emphasise that this is not a time for fear, but for informed action. A few small, everyday habits can help ensure that the city remains resilient, not just against COVID-19, but against a range of seasonal infections that tend to surface at this time of year.
