A peculiar red envelope has arrived—not in your mailbox, but rather in lounges, hotels, aeroplanes, people’s thoughts, and now on social media. No sender. No guidelines. Just one sentence: “In the 6 hours you were travelling, did your money make more money?” 

Mid-flight, a mystery man started singing about a secret society, and then these red envelopes that are said to seal destinies appeared out of nowhere. Some say a man swallowed this envelope in panic, while others say the message inside disappeared. Some ended up on the @red.envelope.society Instagram account, which only posts riddles without providing answers.

Everyone wants to know about the Red Envelope Society, from Gen Z adventurers to business travellers.

These red envelopes, which are frequently accompanied by a mysterious melody or a note revealing wealth secrets, have begun to be distributed to curious travellers at Indian airports. The envelopes were said to self-destruct by some. Others said they resulted in online coded messages. And in just a few days, the Instagram handle gained over 200,000 followers, turning it into a speculative hotspot.

Is this a cult of modern finance? A strong network of stock markets? A covert club? Or simply India’s most creative citywide treasure hunt in a long time?

Who is responsible? A collective investment secret? An experiment in performance art? Or something much larger?

Whatever it is, everyone is fascinated by the Red Envelope Society and has developed a great deal of curiosity.
