Prepare to savour the sweetness of mangoes during the Ajeemganj Mango Festival, which will be held from June 1st to June 30th and is organised by the Murshidabad Heritage Development Society (MHDS) and House of Sheherwali. Visitors have a unique opportunity to experience the diverse world of mangoes during this month-long celebration, which falls during the height of mango season.

Shri Pradip Chopra, President of the Murshidabad Heritage Development Society (MHDS), announced the Mango Festival in Ajeemganj, Jiaganj, and an upcoming world-class Museum in Gosaba Island in the Sunderban.

West Bengal’s Murshidabad district is well known for its wide variety of historically significant mangoes. Once home to the Nawabs, the area has a long history of growing and creating distinctive mango cultivars, many of which bear names derived from historical personalities or occasions.

The celebration will focus on the historical significance of mangoes in the area, especially how the Mughal Emperor Akbar promoted their cultivation and cross-breeding, which resulted in the creation of many different varieties. With more than 500 varieties, India is the world’s largest producer of mangoes. In Murshidabad alone, there are about 150 varieties.

Some of the renowned varieties of mango of Murshidabad are Kohitoor, Nawab Pasand, Inayat Pasand, Ranipasand, Champa, Bimli, Anaras, Saranga, Gulabkhas, Mohanbhog, Peyarafuli, Kishanbhog, Chandankosa, Himsagar, Langra, Lakshmanbhog, Bhawani, Rani, Bhabani, Molamjam, and Shahdulla.

Similar to North Bengal’s tea trails or Europe’s wine trails, guests staying at the House of Sheherwali can enjoy a unique daily mango trail experience. Local orchards are visited every morning to hand-pick and sample mangoes directly from the trees. Upon returning to the House, visitors can relish the mouthwatering tastes of in-season mangoes while taking in the tranquil Ganga River views. In addition, all tourists can explore mango orchards, discover rare and regional varieties that honour Murshidabad’s rich mango heritage, and learn about the history and cultivation of the fruit.
