Laughtersane Makes His Acting Debut With Hoichoi Series Birangana

As the platform welcomes one of Bengal’s most adored digital creators into its storytelling universe, Hoichoi‘s upcoming original series, Birangana, is a compelling how-and-why-dunit crime thriller. Laughtersane, whose real name is Niranjan Mondal, makes a stunning acting debut as Chirayu, a quiet florist with a haunting past and an enduring sense of mystery. Sandipta Sen, who plays the fierce and fearless role of Inspector Chitra Basu—a woman struggling to survive in a system that is meant to silence her—matches the spotlight with equal vigor.
The series, which is directed by Nirjhar Mitra and will air on Hoichoi from July 25th, combines two pivotal performances in a groundbreaking addition to the network’s crime thriller lineup.
In a daring new avatar, Sandipta Sen plays a role that is very different from anything she has ever played. She takes on the role of Inspector Chitra Basu, one of the most complex and fierce characters in her career, when she returns to the OTT space with Birangana. Sandipta portrays a shrewd, reflective officer who is continuously undercut in a patriarchal system in a performance that simmers with quiet rage and resiliency. After her mother’s sudden departure, Chitra was raised by a single father and has led a life shaped by self-control. But she has to face the price of defiance and what it means to stand alone when her instincts take her into uncharted, dangerous territory.
Giving insight into her role, Sandipta Sen said, “It has been a life-changing experience to play Chitra Basu in Birangana. I’ve never played a female police officer before, complete with action sequences, a makeup-free appearance, and the pressure of the uniform. I’m thankful to Nirjhar Mitra and Hoichoi for entrusting me with such a complex character; the role challenged me both emotionally and physically. The prospect of audiences meeting Chitra excites me”.
In Birangana, Niranjan Mondal, better known online as Laughtersane and known for his trademark humor, experiences a dramatic metamorphosis as Chirayu Talukdar, a florist with a haunted stillness and a past shrouded in silence. It gets harder to ignore his quiet proximity to the chaos going on around her as his path starts to intersect with Chitra Basu’s world regularly. Questions are raised about Chirayu’s true identity, the truths he holds, and what he might be concealing behind his calm exterior, as the coincidences and timing seem too exact. He becomes more and more grey with each interaction; he is no longer merely a face in the background but a mystery Chitra cannot afford to ignore.
“It’s overwhelming in the best way—exciting, scary, and incredibly rewarding. Nirjhar da trusted me with a role that is intense, emotional, and very different from what people know me for, and Hoichoi gave me a place to not only perform but also grow. It required planning, vulnerability, and stepping outside of my comfort zone, so the change wasn’t simple. However, the difference was entirely due to the trust that Nirjhar da and the Hoichoi team had in me. I felt like I was part of something greater with Birangana—a story that truly resonates. I’m happy to be here, developing and learning. I hope this is only the start,” said Niranjan.
A great series to look forward to.
