The top Bengali entertainment channel, Zee Bangla, is about to premiere its newest fiction serial, Jowar Bhata, which combines the anguish of forbidden love, the ferocity of retaliation, and the frailty of sisterhood. This new serial by Boyhood Productions, which is set in rural Bengal, is sure to captivate viewers with its compelling story and nuanced emotions.

The narrative centers on two sisters who are being raised by their widower father, Hariprasad, in the dying village of Benagram. Nisha is fiery and impatient, attracted to internet fraud to escape their monotonous life, whereas Uji is gentle, disciplined, and ambitious, hoping to study her way out of poverty. Their friendship is complex and fierce despite their differences. When a land transaction with the wealthy Banerjee family falls through and Hariprasad passes away unexpectedly, their entire world falls apart. Driven by a desire for vengeance, Nisha tricks Uji into posing as a wealthy NRI to enter the Banerjee home. Uji is caught between her sister’s loyalty and her own aspirations as she gains their trust and Sidharth Banerjee’s affection.

She is gradually drawn into feelings she cannot control by what starts as a scam, which begs the question of whether she will turn on her sister or the man she loves.

In a tale of two sisters—a relationship that is rarely examined with such ferocity on television—Jowar Bhanta layers themes of love, retaliation, and moral struggle.
