The well-known actress Ms. Gargee Roychowdhury formed a new production company called Theatre Plus, which was introduced to the city’s cultural scene. The official poster for the production company’s first project, Tarasundari, a solo act play by Gargee that is devoted to the renowned actress Tarasundari, was released to commemorate the debut.

The occasion was graced by the Advisor and Mentor of the play, Hon’ble Minister-in-Charge, Higher & School Education Department, Government of West Bengal, and eminent theatre personality Mr. Bratya Basu.

Tarasundari

One of the most illustrious figures in Bengal’s professional theater history, Tarasundari was a groundbreaking performer who was equally adept at humor and tragedy. She was a talented vocalist who could effortlessly render even European songs, and she was a dancer with an unrivaled stage presence. Generations have been and will continue to be inspired by her brave, strong, and creative life.

On November 1, 2025, the play will debut at GD Birla Sabhagar. Gargee will play Tarasundari, bringing to life the tale of a woman who was far ahead of her time. From her renowned profession to her bravery in defending her dignity and self-respect during a time when actors were frequently shunned by society, the production will aim to retrace her remarkable journey.

Gargee started her acting journey with theatre. She, however, does not have any music or dancing experience. She had acted in all forms of media. So she wanted to give back something to the theatre, and hence she came up with the idea of Theatre Plus.

“In addition to being an exceptional actor, Tarasundari was a representation of grace and bravery who defied social prejudices. My honor to her unwavering spirit is to bring her narrative to life. I hope to carry on narrating tales that honor the life of cultural luminaries and the depth of Indian literature with Theatre Plus,” said Gargee.

“I am thankful to Prabuddha da for helping me understand how to sing. I do not have any formal music education, and I am grateful that he is taking the pains to make me understand the nuances of singing,” said the actress.

The play Tarasundari is written and directed by Ujjwal Chattopadhyay, with music and soundscape by Prabuddha Banerjee, stage craft by Soumik Piyali, lighting by Soumen Chakraborty, costumes by Abhishek Roy, visual design by Ekta Bhattacharya, and stage management by Ambarish.

A new era of theater plays that seek to bring long-forgotten icons back to life and reintroduce them to modern audiences with integrity, passion, and talent was ushered in by the debut of Theatre Plus.
