Rare Kidney Transplant On A Man With Factor VII Deficiency

Doctors at Narayana RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur, performed a rare kidney transplant on a young man from Bhutan. The young man was suffering from Factor VII deficiency. It is one of the rarest genetic bleeding disorders that affects just one in five million individuals.
This is the first successful transplant of its kind in the world to date.
The young man’s father had the same genetic defect. He had no compatible donors except his father. This led to an extraordinary medical challenge for the doctors.
This was a first-of-its-kind transplant as the donor carried the same genetic abnormality as the recipient.

Severe Factor VII deficiency is a rare case. Managing such a case requires great effort. Too little Factor VII could lead to fatal bleeding, while too much will lead to dangerous clots.
Not only during the operation, but the postoperative journey was also equally challenging. The patient had paralysis due to a small clot. He recovered fully with careful management under the guidance of the haematology, neurology, and nephrology teams. His creatinine levels are now normal.
The patient and his father are doing well. And that is a piece of great news for the team at Narayana.
