In a significant move that bridges the gap between traditional cottage industries and modern lifestyle aesthetics, the renowned Padma Shri award-winning filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar recently visited the ‘Casa India’ showroom at P-36 CIT Road, Kolkata. The visit was dedicated to celebrating the innovative vision of entrepreneur Vikas Dokania, who has reimagined the humble “cushion” as a canvas for India’s rich cultural heritage.

Also gracing the occasion was producer Amit Agarwal.

For years, home furnishings have leaned toward globalized, mass-produced designs. However, Vikas Dokania has taken a bold step by integrating the intricate craftsmanship of local artisans into everyday home accessories. By utilizing indigenous cottage industry techniques, he has transformed cushions into artisanal masterpieces that tell stories of India’s diverse cultural landscape.

During the event, Madhur Bhandarkar expressed his profound admiration for this initiative. Known for his realistic storytelling in cinema, the filmmaker noted that he traveled all the way from Mumbai specifically to support this unique endeavor.

“To see our traditional roots being elevated to such a premium, global standard is truly inspiring. Innovation like this ensures that our local artisans find a place in the modern home. This is also the first time that I came to know that summer collections can be there for cushions as well. This is an innovative idea, and I am very impressed,” said the director.

The director also revealed his new film, The Wife, which will be based on the lives of Bollywood wives. There are three stories in the film. Sonali Kulkarni, Regina Cassandra, and Mouni Roy will be seen in the film. The shoot is already done. It is in the post-production stage. The film will show the realities of the lives of the wives of eminent Bollywood actors. The film is inspired by real events.

The launch was not just a local celebration but a signal of major commercial expansion. Speaking to the media, Vikas Dokania shared his ambitious roadmap for the brand:

National Availability: These culturally-themed cushions will now be available across various regions of India, making heritage-inspired decor accessible to a wider audience.

International Footprint: In a major boost to the “Make in India” initiative, talks are currently underway for foreign exchange and export partnerships with Dubai, marking the brand’s first step toward global dominance.

Success, as they say, is often a collective effort. Vikas Dokania attributed the growth of Casa India to the unwavering support of his family. His wife, Bandana Dokania, has been a pillar of strength and a key collaborator in the project. Furthermore, the fresh perspectives of the younger generation—his daughter Trisha Dokania and son Yash Dokania—have infused the brand with the modern energy required to scale new heights.

The event concluded with a sense of optimism, proving that when tradition meets modern marketing, it creates a sustainable future for local craftsmen while beautifying homes across the globe.
