To provide early hearing detection and intervention services for newborns and children throughout Eastern India, Neotia Bhagirathi Woman and Child Care Centre, Newtown, has opened a cutting-edge Hearing Loss & Cochlear Implant (CI) Clinic at its Paediatric Multispecialty Hospital in New Town.

One of the most prevalent sensory disorders in newborns is congenital hearing impairment, which can only be found by organized screening procedures after birth. The hospital has aligned its services with the globally recommended “1-3-6” Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) protocol, which recognizes the critical importance of early diagnosis. This protocol calls for screening by one month, diagnostic confirmation by three months for those who do not pass screening, and intervention by six months.

The program expands upon the Neotia Bhagirathi Woman and Child Care Centre’s preventive care framework, which requires all neonates delivered at the hospital to undergo neonatal hearing and vision screening. Treatment delays will be minimized thanks to the recently opened Hearing Loss & Cochlear Implant Clinic, which will provide thorough evaluation and prompt intervention within the ideal therapeutic window.

Early infancy hearing loss that is left untreated can have a major impact on speech development, language acquisition, cognitive development, and preparedness for school. In order to prevent irreversible cortical auditory deprivation, early auditory stimulation is essential. Cochlear implantation continues to be the most successful rehabilitative option for children with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss who do not gain sufficiently from hearing aids.
