The iconic Gyan Manch recently bore witness to a divine evening of classical dance as Dipan Maitra took center stage for a solo Bharatanatyam recital. Organized by the Jodhpur Park Saraswat Cultural Centre, the event was not merely a performance, but a testament to the enduring legacy of the Guru-Shishya tradition.

The evening commenced with a serene Pushpanjali dedicated to Goddess Annapurna. Set to Ragamaslika in Adi Tala, Dipan’s opening shlokam immediately cast a spell over the audience, establishing a meditative atmosphere. This was followed by a rigorous repertoire including Varnam, Keertanam, and Tillana.

A Masterclass in Technique and Emotion

The centerpiece of the night was the Varnam, set to the soulful Karnataka Kapi raga and Chatusra Rupak Tala. Performing a unique composition by Maharaja Swati Tirunal, Dipan displayed a seamless blend of intricate footwork (Nritta) and profound emotional expression (Abhinaya). The precision and grace made the audience lose track of time, proving why Dipan is regarded as one of the city’s rising stars in the classical circuit.

The Shadow of the Guru

Behind Dipan’s flawless postures lay the tireless mentorship of his Guru, Smt. Anita Mallick. For four decades, her institution, Saraswat, has functioned as a pilgrimage site for Bharatanatyam.

Anita Mallick’s influence extends beyond rhythmic patterns; she is known for instilling a deep sense of life philosophy in her students. Every mudra Dipan executed reflected the rigorous training and affection received from the mentor since childhood.

A Journey of Excellence

Dipan Maitra is no stranger to accolades. A B-High Grade artist of Kolkata Doordarshan, her cap is feathered with prestigious titles such as the ‘Nritti Karamundali’ award. Her talent has been formally recognized by Rabindra Bharati University and the Prachin Kala Kendra, Chandigarh. Having performed extensively on both national and international stages, Deepan continues to be a global ambassador for this ancient Indian art form.

As the lamps dimmed at Gyan Manch, the resonance of his ghungroos remained—a reminder that in the hands of dedicated artists like Dipan, the flame of Bharatanatyam burns brighter than ever.
