On the occasion of the nation’s 80th Independence Day, as citizens across West Bengal hoisted the national flag in streets, grounds, and organized institutions, a team of eminent nephrologists from Nephrocare India Limited presented a vital roadmap to achieving freedom from the bondage of physical illness—specifically chronic kidney disease.

Led by renowned nephrologist Dr. Pratim Sengupta, a specialist team comprising Dr. Priangini Lohia, Dr. Vivek Moulik, Dr. Nirmalya Dhar, and Dr. Koushik Banerjee Brikka hosted a special awareness session on the sixth floor of Tapan Sinha Memorial Hospital in Tollygunge. During the event, the doctors introduced the ‘Panchashil’ (Five Pillars) framework, outlining crucial lifestyle modifications necessary to liberate oneself from kidney-related ailments.

The five preventive guidelines released by Nephrocare India Limited include:

  • Avoid Fairness Creams: Driven by the desire for a fairer complexion, many individuals regularly apply various commercial fairness creams to their faces and bodies. Unbeknownst to most users, these cosmetic products can severely compromise kidney function. Because kidney damage often develops silently without early symptoms, patients frequently realize their condition only when it is too late. Experts strongly advise completely avoiding fairness creams.
  • Refrain from Heat-Based Hair Straightening: People should strictly avoid using hair straighteners at home or in beauty parlors to straighten their hair. Various studies have linked the long-term use of chemical and heat-based hair straightening treatments to the onset of severe renal problems.
  • Abandon Gutkha and Areca Nuts: Regardless of temptation, consumption of gutkha and betel nuts must be eliminated, as these substances pose serious systemic and organ health risks.
  • Banish Carbonated Soft Drinks: To maintain optimal renal health, regular or casual consumption of cola and other carbonated soft drinks must be stopped.
  • Avoid Late-Night Screen Time: In the digital age, many individuals stay awake late into the night browsing smartphones or laptops. This lack of adequate rest severely harms the body. To protect the kidneys, the body requires sufficient restorative rest, and individuals are advised to refrain from using mobile phones after 10:00 PM.

In addition to launching the ‘Panchashil’ guidelines, Dr. Pratim Sengupta, Founder and Managing Director of Nephrocare India Limited, emphasized the importance of workplace mobility. He said, “Today, many professionals spend the majority of their day seated at desks due to occupational demands. To keep the body healthy and functional, desk-bound workers need to take a short walking break every half hour”.

This unique Independence Day initiative by Nephrocare India successfully bridged the concept of national freedom with personal health sovereignty, urging citizens to liberate their vital organs from lifestyle-induced diseases.
