This year, Manipal Hospitals, Kolkata, the top private hospital chain in Eastern India, held awareness events throughout its various facilities to mark World Kidney Day. The purpose of the events was to highlight the significance of early detection and preventive care in preserving kidney health.

In keeping with the theme for this year, “Are Your Kidneys OK? Detect Early, Protect Kidney Health”, Dr. Arghya Majumder, Consultant and Head of Department of Nephrology, Dr. Ritesh Kauntia, Consultant, Nephrology, Dr. Uttayan Chakraborty, Associate Consultant, Nephrology, Dr. Bastab Ghosh, Consultant, Uro Surgeon, and Dr. Bimalesh Purkait, Consultant, Urology, gave expert talks at the event at Manipal Hospital in Dhakuria. These experts covered important topics about kidney diseases, their risk factors, and treatment advancements.

The awareness campaign at Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur began in the morning with Dr. Rajiv Sinha, a paediatric nephrologist, discussing the value of kidney care with kids and their parents. The Senior Consultant-Urology & Transplant Surgeon at Manipal Hospital Mukundapur, Dr. Prasanna Kumar Mishra, gave a talk later in the afternoon about kidney health, common kidney-related problems like kidney stones, and the most recent developments in treatment. He held an interactive conversation with adult kidney patients and their families, stressing the value of preventative kidney care. Dr. Bappaditya Mukhopadhyay, Chief Manager-Medical Services, at Manipal Hospital Mukundapur, was present during the session.

Dialysis or a kidney transplant are the two types of renal replacement therapy. Regular screening is crucial for prompt intervention and preventing the irreversible progression of kidney disease to dialysis, particularly for high-risk populations such as diabetics and hypertensives. For many people, dialysis is an essential source of support, but kidney transplantation frequently offers a higher standard of living and more independence. A successful transplant could increase life expectancy and restore some of the normalcy that existed before kidney disease.

Dehydration and bad eating habits are contributing to an increase in kidney stones and other urological conditions. The risk of kidney-related conditions can be considerably decreased by making small adjustments like drinking enough water, consuming less salt, and continuing to be physically active. Notably, patients with kidney failure can benefit greatly from minimally invasive procedures like ureteroscopy and laser treatment.

The day’s activities and interactive sessions were designed to lead participants through clinically relevant topics, from recognizing kidney disease symptoms to the complexities of properly managing them for general health.
