Globe Cinemas Reopens After 20 Year Break Just Before Pujas
The Globe Cinemas resumed business shortly before Durga Puja, following a 20-year break. The Globe, which is situated on Lindsay Street in the center of the city, is currently a dual-plex—a modern two-screen multiplex with seating for 239 and 197 patrons, respectively.
Renowned filmmaker Srijit Mukherji and acclaimed actor Dev attended a star-studded event to commemorate the reopening. Both are included in the much-awaited Durga Puja release, Tekka. Dev and Srijit Mukherji dressed up as ticket salespeople, exciting fans by handing out tickets for their next feature, which will be among the first movies shown at the refurbished Globe Cinemas. This was a sentimental reference to the theater’s legendary past.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to revive the Globe. Kolkata’s cinema lovers have always had a particular place in their hearts for Globe, and this Durga Puja, they may relive the nostalgia. Beginning on October 8, 2024, we will be showing a thrilling selection of movies, including Tekka, Bohurupi, Shastri, Tumbaad, and Stree 2. Like the city’s affection for its cherished festival, it will be a celebration of film and culture” said Mr. Satadeep Saha, Managing Director of SSR Cinemas Pvt. Ltd.
Constructed by the British in 1867 under the name Grand Opera House, this specific location first presented performances in both British and Indian languages, leaving a notable cultural mark on the city. The location was taken over by the Bijou Company Limited in 1917, and under the Madan Theatre name, it was converted into a movie theater in 1922. After changing its name to Globe in 1925, it went on to become one of Kolkata’s most cherished movie theaters.
Globe Cinemas will now be run by SSR Cinemas Pvt. Ltd., under the direction of Mr. Satadeep Saha, fusing the elegance of contemporary filmmaking with the nostalgia of the past.
With a location where history and contemporary entertainment converge, Globe Cinemas’ reopening is set to revitalize the city’s cultural center.
