At Manipal Hospital Dhakuria, a 23-year-old girl with profound venous thrombosis—which could have been lethal if untreated—was successfully treated. An immediate diagnosis at the emergency department indicated a clot in the leg’s blood vessel. In addition to helping to expedite the decision to perform a colonoscopy, Consultant Gastroenterologist Dr. Kushan Sengupta, Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Supratip Kundu, and Consultant Endovascular Surgeon Dr. Shubhabrata Banerjee were crucial in advising the girl to continue the treatment. The child had been to several hospitals, but her condition could not be identified, so there was a nearly six-month delay. Treatment was quicker and more efficient thanks to the hospital’s state-of-the-art equipment and quick response.

“A clot in the leg’s blood vessel was discovered during the initial evaluation. For the previous six months, she also complained of bleeding through her motion passage. Being a young woman from a conservative household, she initially objected to the suggested colonoscopy. She was advised that a colonoscopy was necessary because she would require blood thinners to treat the clot. Still, we were unable to begin those treatments because she was already bleeding rectally. Nevertheless, she consented, and the colonoscopy was eventually carried out” said Dr. Kushan Sengupta, a consultant gastroenterologist.

After a biopsy, the extensive ulcers discovered during the colonoscopy were determined to be caused by ulcerative colitis. After starting steroids, she made significant progress.

This case highlights the importance of prompt colonoscopy in cases of lower gastrointestinal bleeding, as well as the need to educate patients and their families about the benefits of the procedure. After seven days in the hospital, she was released, and she is doing well. She will continue to take her medication for a while longer.

Seeking medical attention is crucial if you experience sudden swelling in your legs due to stressful situations, long-haul flights, hard work, or even viral fever. The most visible condition is deep vein thrombosis, which is a dangerous condition. Unattended clots from these deep veins have the potential to cause sudden collapse and death within minutes if they manage to reach the lungs in significant quantities.

Since deep vein thrombosis can strike at any age, prompt diagnosis is crucial. Recognizing the signs and symptoms is essential; failing to do so could have fatal results. Although there are treatments available, early identification of the primary cause of these conditions is still crucial.
