3 ECMO Adenovirus Survivors Share Their Stories At Medica
While the entire city was experiencing a life-threatening crisis as a result of the Adenovirus taking the lives of young children, Medica was thrilled to see some youngsters recover and return home after receiving ECMO support. As Asia’s largest and most technologically equipped ECMO facility, Medica began its ECMO adventure in 2014. Most ECMO machines are located in eastern India at the ESLO-certified center, which is staffed round-the-clock by ECMO experts. The successful rescue and transport of patients receiving ECMO support from different states and areas have been facilitated by skilled specialists.
To date, Medica has handled more than 300 ECMO patients with a success rate of over 50%, making it a pioneer in the treatment of COVID cases with ECMO assistance in eastern India. It has been established that the advanced ECMO facility, which is exclusively accessible at Medica, made it feasible for even young Adenovirus patients to survive the disease’s onslaught.
A panel discussion program was organized at the hospital. It was graced by Dr. Dipanjan Chatterjee ECMO Physician, and Head, Cardio–Pulmonary Critical Care, Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Kolkata, Dr. Kunal Sarkar, Senior Vice Chairman, Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Dr. Hirak Suvra Majumdar, Consultant, Cardio-Pulmonary Critical Care, Cardiac Anesthesiology and ECMO Physician and Dr. Writuparna Das, Consultant, Cardio-Pulmonary Critical Care, Cardiac Anesthesiology and ECMO Physician.
The event was planned to honor the ECMO survivors’ triumphant struggle against adenovirus infection, and Medica proudly brought three ECMO survivors to speak about their medical experience.
Aryav Suman, 5, Sudeshna Basu, 15, and Bikramjit Mukherjee, 4, were the three young patients who overcame their medical problems and now are leading a normal life.
The mission of Medica has always been to revolutionize the healthcare system in Eastern India by delivering advanced critical care and organ support services, such as the Heart/Lung Transplant Program and ECMO, to the region.
