A.S. Dulat’s Memoir ‘A Life in the Shadows’ Throws Light On His Astutely Observed Life
Oxford Bookstore organized an exclusive interaction around ‘A Life in The Shadows: A Memoir’ by Amarjit Singh Dulat, Former Chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and special director of the Indian Intelligence Bureau (IB).
A. S. Dulat was in conversation with Jawhar Sircar, MP, Rajya Sabha around his latest book “A Life in the Shadows: A Memoir”, published by HarperCollins India.
India’s most accomplished spymaster, A.S. Dulat, is known for his work on the Kashmir conflict. Because the former spymaster has been so secretive about his personal life, very little is known about him in the public eye. But, Dulat finally breaks that silence in this book. This is a collection of stories from various points in space and time rather than a standard, chronological narrative. He still has to abide by the confidentiality requirements of his line of work, but he recounts a fascinating tale of a well-lived and astutely observed life.
From his early years as a young intelligence officer to his bloody childhood in Lahore and New Delhi, from his meetings with foreign spymasters to his travels around the world, from his observations on Kashmir—both political and personal—after Article 370 was repealed to his encounters with world leaders, politicians, and celebrities, from Bhopal to Nepal and from Kashmir to China, Dulat tells the story of his life with remarkable honesty, vivacity, and wit.
The author Dulat and Jawhar Sircar engaged the audience in an engaging, perceptive, and entertaining conversation. They talked about the former RAW Chief’s intriguing book and also a thoroughly lived and astutely observed life.
