Fascinating International Mother Language Day Celebrations
Heritage Institute of Technology commemorated International Mother Language Day. On November 17, 1999, UNESCO proclaimed February 21 to be International Mother Language Day. Since February 21, 2000, people all over the world have been observing it. The proclamation was presented as a tribute to Bangladesh’s linguistic revolution.
The Institute arranged an exhibition and a cultural program to illustrate the language movement that began in Bangladesh on February 21, 1952, when four students were killed while advocating for the use of Bengali as their official mother tongue in Bangladesh, to educate the students about the significance of this day.
The principal of Heritage Institute of Technology, Prof. Basab Chaudhuri, discussed the significance of this day for all Bengalis and how, after much sacrifice and effort, Bangla was recognized as the mother tongue in Bangladesh. “We should observe two minutes of silence today in remembrance of the students who gave their lives to ensure that Bengali becomes the official language of Bangladesh,” said Prof. Chaudhuri.
With assistance from the Language and News clubs of the Heritage Institute of Technology, the Pravasana Club took an active part in this program.
The Language Movement served as a model for Bengalis around the globe on how to save their homeland.
