A Breast Cancer Survivors Meet and Awareness Program was organized by Narayana Hospital in Howrah, bringing together community people, medical experts, and survivors to celebrate resiliency and raise awareness of breast cancer. In honor of World Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this special event sought to raise awareness of early detection, support survivors, and stress the value of routine screenings.

Dr. Neha Chaudhary, Consultant – Breast Oncology & Oncoplastic Surgeon, Narayana Hospital, Howrah, said, “This incident serves as a reminder of the fortitude and tenacity of our survivors as well as the advancements in the treatment of breast cancer. This is a survivors’ meet, where people who have survived breast cancer come together to share their stories of success and experiences. We brought them here to share their own stories. This kind of event has two purposes. Their primary goal is to inform people who might not be familiar with breast cancer about its symptoms, including lumps, discharge from the nipples, and retracted nipples, as well as how to do self-examinations and what to do if these indicators emerge. Secondly, they aid in debunking misconceptions and anxieties related to breast cancer. Speaking with survivors firsthand gives people courage and reaffirms that they can face and overcome this”.

Inspiring survivor stories, interactive breast health lessons, and professional advice on early detection, self-examinations, and preventive measures were all included in the program. In order to build a sense of community and shared resilience, participants got the chance to interact with oncologists, counselors, and other survivors. The program demonstrated Narayana Hospital’s dedication to raising awareness of cancer and providing all-encompassing care for patients with breast cancer.

Dr. Vivek Agarwala, Director of Medical Oncology & Hemat Oncology at Narayana Hospital- Howrah said, “In India and around the world, breast cancer is among the most prevalent cancers. Regrettably, it also has one of the highest death rates of any malignancy. Increasing awareness is crucial. Nearly 70% of patients in India present with breast cancer at a locally advanced stage, indicating a frequently delayed detection rate. On the other hand, 90% of cases in Western nations are identified early, greatly enhancing treatment results and survival rates. We must raise awareness about breast cancer to improve cure rates here. This includes teaching people about early diagnosis, lifestyle choices that can lower the risk of developing the disease, how to identify symptoms, and how crucial it is to see a doctor and get treatment as soon as possible. This strategy is essential for increasing survival and giving patients the knowledge they need to confront breast cancer”.

At the event’s conclusion, Narayana Hospital reaffirmed its commitment to raising awareness, helping survivors, and growing the community’s access to breast cancer preventive and treatment services.
