On International Day of Education, the Founding Headmaster of Shrewsbury International School India discusses how an integrated learning culture can shape future leaders.

The Association of Boarding Schools recently found that 78 percent of boarders are motivated by their peers in comparison to 49 percent of public school students. “The surging popularity of boarding schools can be attributed to this synergistic learning environment along with a sharp focus on the holistic development of students. Today parents choose boarding schools not just because of the academic excellence they offer but to also ensure that their children grow into fulfilled, multifaceted individuals,” said Mr. Dominic Tomalin.

On International Education Day (January 24), he outlines some of the salient factors that make boarding schools the preferred choice for future-forward education:

A multifaceted approach to education

A well-established boarding school usually offers not just exemplary academic performance data but also a list of inspiring alumni it has produced. It is likely to have a unique core philosophy that offers each child exactly what they need to reach their full potential. Boarding schools also offer well-resourced amenities conducive to holistic development including smart classrooms, thoughtfully designed boarding houses, excellent academic infrastructure, and facilities accommodating extracurricular and sporting activities.

International curricula

International institutions that align with the larger goals of your child offer a curriculum that is tailored to enable access to top global universities. Shrewsbury for instance offers English National Curriculum, empowering pupils to undertake Cambridge International IGCSE Examinations in Years 10 and 11. These examinations then qualify the pupils for entry into A-Level courses. Parents and students today, prefer a world-class education and an interactive learning environment as opposed to modules that encourage passive, rote learning.

An inclusive, multicultural ethos

To be a global citizen today, a young person must gain exposure to multiculturalism, as it expands their perspective, fosters respect for diverse viewpoints and ethnicities, and cultivates mutual respect between individuals hailing from different backgrounds. An international institution is a perfect space to learn the value of inclusivity, collaboration, and multilingualism. An integrated learning culture encourages active listening and teamwork and emphasizes the importance of both independence and interdependence to achieve shared goals. It goes a long way in preparing students for leadership roles in the future.

Mentorship and peer support

A boarding school is also the perfect place to learn the value of peer support. The warmth, trust, and fellowship between older students and their younger peers create a safe, nurturing home away from home. Mentorship opportunities kindle leadership qualities and empathy. They also polish interpersonal and communication skills that last a lifetime. Guided sessions where students discuss their experiences and learn more about each other offer a safe space for clearing doubts and establishing lasting understanding.

Focus on social responsibility

Boarding schools do not just help students bridge classroom learning with practical learning experiences but also imbue them with value-based education that connects them to the world beyond the campus. A pedagogy rooted in ethics and social responsibility encourages students to address real-world problems, positively contribute to society, and extend themselves to make a real difference to the world outside.
