At the “The Makers of Fashion” exhibition, Kolkata saw a celebration of tradition and resiliency amid the delicate shimmer of handwoven threads and the rhythmic clatter of looms. This Women’s Day event, which was hosted by renowned designers Rohan Pariyar and Karustuti at the historic Harrington Arts Centre, honored the unwavering spirit of Bengal’s female artisans.

The significance of the event was further enhanced when veteran actress and politician Moon Moon Sen felicitated the artisans, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the fashion industry and their commitment to Bengal’s handloom heritage.

The goal of Karustuti, a ray of hope for Bengali weavers, is to revive the handloom tradition of the state. In the face of mass production and deception endangering their livelihoods, Karustuti provides artisans with appreciation, knowledge, and legitimate market access.

Presently working with 103 weavers, the majority of whom are women and many of whom have special needs, the organization promotes women’s empowerment and education for children from weaver families in addition to textiles.

Renowned for his enduring dedication to handcrafted luxury and ethical fashion, Rohan Pariyar partnered with Karustuti to highlight the heritage of Bengal’s weaving customs. With its elaborately woven textiles, exquisite embroidery, and designs that captured the essence of Bengal’s artistic legacy, the exhibition developed into a captivating tapestry of talent and passion.

Fashion enthusiasts, business executives, and social impact activists flocked to observe the artistry of Bengali textiles, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Each piece told a tale of tenacity, artistry, and the classic appeal of handloom fabrics.

The goal of Karustuti is still to support marginalized craftspeople, guarantee their access to education, and create a future in which each weaver is valued for their abilities.

Even as the effects of this exhibition diminish, discussions about sustainable fashion and the value of local craftspeople continue to be sparked.

With the event “The Makers of Fashion”, Rohan Pariyar and Karustuti reaffirm their dedication to a world in which fashion is woven with history, heritage, and humanity—not just something that is worn.
