Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, has now emerged as one of the most threatening lifestyle-related health concerns across the globe. Often referred to as the ‘silent killer’, Hypertension may not show noticeable symptoms initially, but if left medically unattended, it can lead to severe complications like heart attack, kidney disorders, and sudden death. Chronic hypertension gradually affects several vital organs of the body and continues to remain one of the leading causes of cardiovascular and renal diseases worldwide.

There are two main types of Hypertension. First is Primary or Essential Hypertension, in which there is no single cause but a variety of factors. This is the commonest type and includes factors like diet, genetics, lifestyle, aging, etc. The second and less common is Secondary Hypertension, which is caused by renal artery narrowing, endocrine disorders like Cushing’s Syndrome, Sleep apnea, and other usually treatable causes.

According to global health statistics, nearly 1.4 billion people are affected by high blood pressure. However, early awareness and appropriate medical treatment can help in preventing the fatal side. It is usually observed that people of this age group usually suffer from the attack of high blood pressure, which in the later days turns to be deadly, hence causing several other adversities to human health.

Nowadays, hypertension is common in young adults. The main contributing factors are stress at home and work, repressed anger, smoking, and other addictions. Unhealthy eating habits and erratic lifestyle, compounded with lack of sleep and relaxation, are some other causes.

The normal range of blood pressure is supposed to range from 110 to 120, which can be termed as Systolic, and when it is between 80 and 90, then it is Diastolic.

Anything above this range is high, especially the Diastolic. The Blood Pressure Parameter escalated from this range is asserted to be high and adverse Blood Pressure.

Observed annually on May 17, World Hypertension Day aims to spread awareness about the dangers of uncontrolled blood pressure and encourage people to adopt healthier lifestyles. The theme for World Hypertension Day 2026 is Controlling Hypertension Together – Check Your Blood Pressure Regularly, Defeat the Silent Killer.

The preventive care of Hypertension includes several essential guidelines for managing borderline and mild hypertension effectively. The Preventive Care measures emphasize-

i. The importance of maintaining a healthy body weight according to BMI standards

ii. Following a balanced diet that is low in salt, excessive animal protein, and unhealthy fats while ensuring adequate potassium intake.

iii. Regularising adequate physical activity such as walking, cycling, swimming, yoga, or freehand exercises for at least 20 to 30 minutes. Indulging in energy boosting exercises for at least three to five times a week can significantly help in controlling blood pressure levels to normal temperatures.

iv. The need for smoking cessation and reducing the intake of caffeine, tea, and alcohol.

v. Adequate sleep ranging between six and eight hours every night. Stress management through meditation and relaxation practices. This plays a crucial role in maintaining cardiovascular health.

vi. Monitoring your blood pressure regularly after the age of 40 is strongly recommended, especially for individuals with diabetes, obesity, or a family history of hypertension.

vii. Following prescribed medications diligently and seeking timely medical consultation are equally important in preventing long-term complications. Special attention is also necessary during pregnancy, as blood pressure fluctuations during this period can pose risks to both mother and child.

Apart from affecting the heart, kidneys, and brain, hypertension can also adversely impact eye health by damaging delicate retinal blood vessels. The consequences may range from minor subconjunctival hemorrhage to serious vision-threatening conditions such as retinal vein occlusion. Healthcare experts continue to stress that awareness, early diagnosis, lifestyle modification, and regular monitoring remain the strongest weapons against hypertension.

On this World Hypertension Day, individuals are encouraged to prioritize regular blood pressure check-ups and adopt healthier habits to ensure a safer and healthier future.
