Doctors, medical professionals, patients, and supporters of Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre & Research Institute came together to commemorate the 53 years of the institute’s service to humanity as well as the 16th anniversary of renowned oncologist Dr. Saroj Gupta’s passing.

In honor of the visionary physician whose work revolutionized cancer care in Eastern India, the day started with a blood donation camp and floral tributes at Dr. Saroj Gupta’s statue inside the institute campus.

Filmmaker, actor, and Kolkata Sheriff Goutam Ghose was present at the event as Chief Guest when the commemorative biography “A Visionary: The Life and Legacy of Dr. Saroj Gupta” was unveiled later at Press Club Kolkata.

Goutam Ghose considered Dr. Gupta’s lifelong commitment to humanity and his goal of enabling common people, particularly those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, to receive cancer treatment.

The biography follows Dr. Gupta’s incredible transformation from a young physician with a social mission to one of the most reputable names in oncology in India. It also goes over the difficulties in creating a facility where patients could be treated with respect, empathy, and hope.

Dr. Saroj Gupta, who was born on December 5, 1929, established the first non-governmental, non-profit cancer hospital in Eastern India, the Cancer Centre Welfare Home & Research Institute, which is now known as Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre & Research Institute. Dr. Gupta envisioned a facility devoted to compassionate and reasonably priced healthcare at a time when many families were still unable to afford specialized cancer treatment.

What started on donated marshy land eventually developed into one of the top comprehensive cancer centers in India. Modern radiation oncology facilities, PET-CT imaging, specialized cancer surgery units, medical oncology services, intensive care support, and bone marrow transplant facilities are all located at SGCCRI.

In order to create a healing environment for children receiving treatment, the institute also has a specially designed pediatric cancer center with artificial hills, water features, a toy train, and an auditorium.

In addition to providing accessible treatment programs, SGCCRI has increased its involvement in cancer research by partnering with reputable domestic and foreign organizations. In underprivileged areas, outreach programs continue to promote cancer awareness and preventive healthcare.

During the program, Anjan Gupta, the SGCCRI’s Hon. Secretary, discussed the principles that influenced his father’s life.

Dr. Saroj Gupta’s philosophy still serves as the foundation for the organization, according to Dr. Arnab Gupta, Medical Director and Oncosurgeon at SGCCRI.

In honor of Ila Gupta’s unseen contributions and assistance in the establishment of the organization alongside Dr. Saroj Gupta, the commemorative volume has been dedicated to her.

Doctors, medical professionals, social workers, and members of the cultural fraternity attended the program. Many of them described Dr. Saroj Gupta as not only a trailblazing oncologist but also a kind person whose values continue to inspire future generations.
