The Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata (I-NK) has officially inaugurated its cutting-edge Gamma Knife Radiosurgery facility, marking a significant milestone in regional medical care. The launch event took place at the Seminar Hall on the 9th floor of the institute.

The advanced unit was inaugurated by Chief Guest Shri Samik Bhattacharya, State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, West Bengal, and Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. The ceremony also featured distinguished Guests of Honour, including Mr. Narayan Swaroop Nigam (IAS), Health Secretary for the Government of West Bengal, and Ms. Smita Pandey (IAS), Administrator at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, alongside senior hospital leadership, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and medical specialists.

Gamma Knife Radiosurgery is a specialized form of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) engineered to deliver highly focused radiation directly to targeted areas within the brain. Crucially, this treatment achieves therapeutic goals without conventional surgical incisions or opening of the skull, minimizing trauma to healthy surrounding tissues.

Brain tumors (benign and selected malignant lesions)

Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs)

Trigeminal neuralgia

Other neurological and functional disorders

Suitability for the procedure is determined following a rigorous clinical and imaging assessment by a multidisciplinary team of specialists.

The facility expands access to cutting-edge, precision-focused neurological treatments for patients throughout West Bengal and across Eastern and North-Eastern India. Hospital representatives emphasize that procedures utilizing this technology are typically performed as outpatient or day-care interventions, ensuring quicker patient recovery and an earlier return to normal daily activities.
