A huge ruckus occurred at the trailer launch of the upcoming Bollywood film The Bengal Files.

The film’s trailer launch was originally to take place at a multiplex. But due to political pressures, the event was cancelled at the venue. Later, the venue was changed to ITC Royal Bengal. However, the trailer launch was stopped midway.

Actor Pallavi Joshi and director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri shared their discontent at the event.

Because of its daring depiction of historical events, the film, which explores the communal violence in undivided Bengal in the 1940s, particularly the Direct Action Day and Noakhali riots of 1946, has already generated controversy.

Speaking at the trailer launch, the director said, “Is there two constitutions in India now? One that is prevailing in India and another that is applicable in Bengal? This is the land of eminent directors like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, and others. And this is the place where a filmmaker’s work has been treated so badly. What is wrong in this state? Is there no freedom of expression?”

The director also added that the hotel manager could not tell him under whose orders the trailer launch event could not proceed. “When we booked the venue, they very well knew what we would be showing. And now they are behaving as if this were something that they were not aware of. Some people cut the wires to prevent the trailer from being shown to the media. Who gave the orders?” added the director.

The Bengal Files is written and directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri and produced by Abhishek Agarwal and Pallavi Joshi.
