An Unfairy Tale Maadathy Showcased at 25th KIFF; Deals With Subaltern Deities in India
The press meet of the film An Unfairy Tale Maadathy took place in the presence of director Leena Manimekalai and the cast of the film at the 25th Kolkata International Film Festival.
The story of the film is about subaltern deities which has a great importance in India. Each deity has a unique legend and these legends are often interwoven with the socio-history tropes of India. Puthirai Vannaar is an unseeable Dalit caste group in South India. Their forced occupation is to wash the clothes of the other Dalits, the dead and the menstruating women. The story shows a young girl who grew up in the slave caste group and how she came to be immortalised as their local deity, Maadathy.
Speaking at the press event, the director said “I could make it in a documentary but the drama in the lives of these people made me decide that I will make a full length film on their lives. I felt that the audience must know about the lives of these Dalits who live in India”.
The cast of the film consists of Ajimina Kassim (Yosana) and Semmalar Annam (Veni).
The music of the film has been composed by Karthik Raja.
