The Kolkata Mail correspondent Priyanka Dutta caught up with the author in an exclusive conversation about his book, The Gift. Excerpts..
How important is writing true stories for young readers?
Ramendra Kumar- Children today encounter an endless stream of stories: some factual, some fictional, and much that blurs the line between the two. Social media, in particular, floods them with content — often exaggerated, sugar-coated, or far removed from reality. In this environment, it becomes vital to introduce young readers to real-life role models like Dr. Edassery, who embody courage, compassion, and sacrifice — true, flesh-and-blood heroes who can light the way and inspire them.
Since readers have low attention spans now, how difficult was it to write a true story?
Ramendra Kumar- It is definitely a challenge. However, if the narrative has all the elements of an engaging story, moves at a good pace, and weaves values subtly into its fabric, it can hold the reader’s attention.
How important is illustration for the story for kids?
Ramendra Kumar- For young readers, illustrations play a crucial role. They create an immediate connection with the story and, when visually appealing, can spark curiosity and inspire the reader to pick up the book.
Do you think that young readers will be hooked to such stories based on real-life personalities?
Ramendra Kumar- Yes, without a doubt. Children are far more likely to connect with and be inspired by genuine heroes who face real-life challenges in authentic environments than by fictional characters living in make-believe worlds.
Have you met Dr. Aquinas in real life?
Ramendra Kumar- I conducted extensive research on her life and work and engaged in conversations with her.
What will be your next book on? Will it be based on a true story again?
Ramendra Kumar- My next book is based on the life story of a remarkable woman whose tireless efforts have left an enduring impact on the environment.
