A “bloodied” and “charred” supporter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India was “barbecued” on a charcoal grill at the South Gate of Victoria Memorial in Kolkata in advance of International Meatless Day. According to the startling image, eating meat entails consuming the remains of sentient beings who cherished their lives and didn’t want to die, that all animals, including humans, are composed of flesh, and we are all capable of experiencing pain and a range of other emotions.

According to PETA India Campaigns Coordinator Utkarsh Garg, “There is no reason for anyone to chomp on a chicken, just as most of us would never munch on a human. PETA India is encouraging people who are offended by the notion of a human barbecue to refuel with tasty and nutritious vegan food instead of the remains of disfigured animals”.

Vegan diets save animals a great deal of pain. Large numbers of animals are raised in cramped conditions in enormous warehouses in the meat, egg, and dairy industries of today. Piglets are castrated without the use of painkillers, fish are sliced open while still alive, cows and buffaloes are violently taken from their cherished babies, and chickens have their throats slashed while still conscious. Vegans help prevent future pandemics, including SARS, avian flu, swine flu, Ebola, and HIV, and lower their risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Furthermore, a United Nations report found that a global transition to veganism is required to counteract the worst effects of the climate crisis, as the rearing of animals for food is a major contributor to land degradation and water pollution.
