Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals in Kolkata acquired the da Vinci Xi Robot for the first time in Eastern India as part of their commitment to staying ahead of the technological curve. Being the first hospital in Eastern India to introduce the da Vinci Si Robot ten years ago, it has since advanced with even more cutting-edge technology.

The da Vinci Xi Robot can help surgeons intervene in a variety of medical specialties, including gastroenterology, cardiology, urology, oncology, and gynecology. For accessing bodily areas in the lower abdomen that are challenging to reach with bare hands, the robot is of great assistance.

With better visibility and dexterity thanks to the da Vinci Xi robot, surgeons may carry out minimally invasive procedures with more precise motions and overall higher patient safety. It takes less time to dock the machine on the patient’s body before the surgery and still maintains high levels of precision. Patients gain from a smaller scar, a shorter hospital stay with less blood loss, and a quicker recovery.

The doctor performs the entire robotic surgery operation while seated at a console with a monitor showing the surgical site, with the help of robotic arms. An abdominal keyhole is used to put a high magnification 3D camera into one of the arms, which provides a high resolution, magnified (12), 3-D view of the surgery site. Surgical instruments that mimic the motion of human hands and wrists are coupled to the other mechanical arms.

The main advantage of robotic surgery is that there are fewer incisions, which leads to a quicker recovery and fewer complications. As the incision is significantly smaller than the typical amount of cut, there is also a reduced likelihood of infection, less need for hospitalization, and an earlier return to normal life after the procedure.

To date, there are 6 robots operating in different hospitals in Eastern India.
