“Debt Is Not Restricted To Financial Matters Alone”- Director Atanu Ghosh On New Film Shesh Pata
Are you worried about paying back your debt? Unless you pay the debt, you will not be free. This is a very common saying. However, debt is not restricted to financial matters alone. Debt can relate to any matter in an individual’s life. Debt, repayment, and the sense of freedom are the pillars on which director Atanu Ghosh’s new film Shesh Pata is based.
Debt not only leads to financial issues but also has an effect on your mental and emotional health too. Some debts weigh more on the mind than others. Even the person to whom you owe is also under the same level of pressure. As a result of this, both the receiver and the giver are affected. It is with this thought that the director came up with the idea of the film.
The story of the film is about Balmiki, an arrogant nonconformist writer of fiction who was popular in the Bengali film industry during the eighties and nineties for his unconventional themes. But some drastic turn of events changed the course of his life and he now leads a life of sheer neglect and isolation. Sounak is a young man in his thirties and has a family to support. His younger brother is studying, and his father was a colorist in the film industry. His father lost his job after the process turned digital and he couldn’t adapt to the new technology. Sounak must achieve the target set for him in his career or he would face dire consequences.
Medha, a sensitive and sophisticated middle-aged woman, suddenly finds her life thrown out of gear and must find poise and purpose back at the earliest. For the last seven years, Sounak is in a relationship with Deepa, a painter in a ceramic factory, desperately fighting for her existence and dignity. One morning, these four people – Balmiki, Medha, Sounak, and Deepa discover themselves at crossroads and must find their perspective, dream, or desire to survive.
Atanu Ghosh will be working with Prosenjit Chatterjee again in this film. Speaking about his rapport with the actor, the director said “We share mutual trust and faith. This has a great impact on an actor and a director’s relationship. He always expressed a desire to work with me again after we wrapped the shooting of a film. That does not always happen with all actors that you work with”.
Prosenjit Chatterjee will be seen in the role of Balmiki, Vikram Chatterjee will play Sounak, Gargi Roy Chowdhury will be seen as Medha and Rayati Bhattacharya will play Deepa in the film.
After a hiatus of three years, Vikram Chatterjee will be returning to the big screens again. The actor was looking forward to the shoot of the film as he has been given an extremely interesting character to portray in the film.
The director said “Shooting during the pandemic will be difficult. We will all have our masks on and have to shoot keeping in mind the social distancing norms. However, this has how our life has changed. And we have to adjust to that”.
When asked why the film has been named Shesh Pata and whether it has any link with O. Henry’s story, the director said it has nothing to do with that story. Shesh Pata refers to the last page of a manuscript. O. Henry is one of his favorite authors and his philosophies often creep in his works. The film shows how debt has no age, no face, and no gender. Everyone has their own debts in this world.
Prosenjit Chatterjee will be working with the director for the third time now. The actor liked the way the director told a story. The actor said that he had not acted in such a role before.
Gargi Roy Chowdhury will be seen in a different look in the film. The actress will also be singing a song for the film.
The film is produced by Friends Communication.
With a thought-provoking story and amazing cast, Shesh Pata looks like a film to look forward to!!
