Geet Gobinda Presented by Kolkata Creative Art Performers at The Minerva Theatre
Madhyamgram-based Kolkata Creative Art Performers presented its play Geet Gobinda at the Minerva Theatre recently.
Geet Gobinda stresses on the importance of being humane.
Babathakur, an emancipated believer in all religions and in humanity, establishes the Satyashanti Dham, an ashram on the banks of the River Ajay with a six-month old boy whom he names Gobinda and a folk artist Raghu. Other persons abandoned by their families and the society join the ashram which becomes a place of love, happiness and peace for all inmates, with Babathakur adopting the prayers of all religions during its meditation hours.
As the ashram grows, Brajo emerges as its main administrator and one of Babathakur’s confidants, at a time when Gobinda is away on a three-year-long tour of the country to experience the outside world. On his return, Gobinda develops a special relationship with Geet (Ayesha) who has joined the ashram after having been shunned by her husband and her community for being a music lover. Geet describes their relationship as purely platonic, and is sure that it will not affect that ashram, but with Gobinda himself not feeling likewise, Brajo is not so sure. Babathakur tries to deal with the issue in his own way, but, with the ever-protective Brajo’s interference, serious problems develop, in which similar situations and problems in our present-day lives find reflection and reveal the important need to be humane.
Directed by Kingsuk Bandyopadhyay who has also written its script, Geet Gobinda featured Prasun Bandyopadhyay as Babathakur, Tanmoy Sarkar as Brajo, Rakesh Kumar Sen as Gobinda, and Soumita Banerjee as Geet.
