Scoliosis refers to the sideways curvature of the spinal cord. This is mostly found in adolescents. The angle of this curve may differ from one person to the other. For some the curve can be small, large, or even somewhere in between. Scoliosis Awareness Month is held in June and is a time dedicated to raising awareness about the situation and promoting good health.

To observe Scoliosis Awareness Month, the Spine Research Foundation in association with HP Ghosh Hospital organized the Awareness Program on Scoliosis.

The speakers at the event were Dr, Saumyajit Basu, Dr. Amitava Biswas, Dr. Trianjan Sarangi, Prof Dr, Indrajit Roy, and Angshuman Ghosh.

These eminent speakers shared their insights on this ailment, and the advances made in the treatment and also highlighted the importance of early awareness and better treatment.

Dr. Sarangi said “Scoliosis can affect people of all age groups and irrespective of their gender. Many kinds of Scoliosis affect the patients. By consulting with a doctor properly, one can understand their Scoliosis and then decide on their mode of treatment. Not everyone requires an operation. Some of them need that. The more early it is detected, the better the outcome is”.

Dr. Biswas said “Curvature of the spine not only helps in walking or sitting properly, it also leads to other problems as well. Due to the curved spine, the patient can develop breathing problems and other issues. By providing treatment at the earliest, one can ensure that the patient can lead a healthy life”.

Patients who have received good treatment and have been leading a good life attended the session. They shared the problems they faced, and how the treatment helped them overcome Scoliosis to lead a healthy life.

With awareness and good treatment options available. Scoliosis can be prevented at the earliest.
