Infertility is always associated with women in India. However it takes the sperm and the ovum to get together so that a child can be made. This is often not remembered when the check-up of individuals are done when the women is not able to conceive. One out of six male is suffering from some problems leading to infertility. Keeping this in mind Apollo Hospitals has come up with India’s first Male Infertility and Impotence Clinic in a hospital set-up.

The announcement was done in the presence of Dr Atanu Jana, Consultant Urologist, Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata and Dr. Amit Ghose, senior consultant urologist, AGH.

The clinic would address issues like erectile dysfunction, penile deformity, ejaculatory dysfunction and other such problems faced by males.

Modern treatments like Intravenous Injection, Vacuum Erection Devices, Penile Prostheses (Implant) will be available at the clinic. Hormonal treatments like Testosterone replacement and Psychosexual counselling will also be done at the clinic. Patients with Medicated urethral system for erection can also receive help at the clinic.

Dr Ghose pointed out that erectile dysfunction is continually growing in modern times. Due to stress, younger population is also affecting the younger population. It is also an indicator of serious vascular disease, which might be the harbinger of cardiovascular disease.

To address the issue of erectile dysfunction, lifestyle modifications can be made. Some of the lifestyle modifications that can be done include avoid smoking, maintain body weight, regular exercising, stop alcohol abuse, modify medications and optimise management of DM, HTN and heart disease.

For addressing issues like penile deformity, Apollo has also launched surgeries, including penile implants, correction of varicocele, correction of obstruction to the vas difference and correction of penile curvature with bovine pericardial patch.
