John Abraham Takes Aim At BookMyShow’s Animal Circus Ticket Sales
Actor and former People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India Person of the Year John Abraham has written an urgent letter on behalf of the organization to BookMyShow Founder and CEO Ashish Hemrajani, urging him to stop selling tickets to circuses with animal acts and implement a policy that promotes only animal-free entertainment.
Rambo Circus, which was recently slapped with a first information report by Pune city police based on the findings of a PETA India investigation, is currently selling tickets on the e-ticketing platform. The investigation revealed that the circus forces dogs to perform unregistered tricks like jumping through hoops and atop a flagpole and that one performer swallowed two fish alive and regurgitated them into a bowl of water. Rambo Circus later admitted to illegally using the fish.
“Many circuses around the world now put on shows with only willing human performers. When animals are used as entertainment props, they are robbed of the lives they were meant to live, and they frequently suffer unnecessarily, confined to insufficient housing and forced to perform terrifying, perplexing tricks under threat of physical punishment” writes John Abraham.
According to PETA India, BookMyShow previously promoted the Ajanta Circus, which was recently sued by the Animal Welfare Board of India for using animals without the required certification.
“I hope you will not support cruelty and that BookMyShow will do the right thing by not promoting, selling, or allowing the sale of tickets for circuses that use animals,” Abraham concludes.
Abraham’s previous PETA India work includes speaking out in support of monkeys forced to dance in Mumbai, urging authorities to crack down on illegal pig slaughter in Goa, and starring in a campaign urging people not to keep birds in cages.
