William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy Macbeth has been made into films all over the world in different languages. Director Raajhorshee De will now be making a film in Bengali on this tragedy and the title of this new venture is Maya.

The first press meet and the official logo launch of the upcoming Bengali film Maya took place recently.

The story has also been penned by Raajhorshee De and the film will be presented by DSR Entertainment House. The film will be produced by Debdas Banerjee and Sharmila Banerjee.

“Maya is the first official adaptation of Macbeth in Bengali films. The film is actually a subversion. The film is based on the perspective of women’s empowerment. The energy from the cast and crew will help you to understand the energy with which we have worked on this film” said the director.

Rafiath Rashid Mithila, Kamaleswar Mukherjee, Tnusree Chakraborty, Gaurav Chakraborty, Sudipta Chakraborty, Koneenica Bandopadhyay, Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, Rohit Banerjee, Richa Sharma, Sudipta Banerjee, Ranieeta Dash, Devlina Kumar, Ratashree Dutta, Ishaan Mazumder, Sayantani Guhathakurta, Ashim Roychoudhury, Gaurav Chatterjee, Anindya Chatterjee, and Kan Singh Sodha will be seen in pivotal roles in this upcoming Bengali film.

Tnusree plays Mrinalini in the film. She is neither black nor white. She is a gray character. All of Shakespeare’s characters are like that. One cannot understand from the beginning what the character will be like in the end. The actress was very excited to act in such a challenging role.

Mithila plays Maya in the film. She is the strongest character in the film. It is through Maya that the entire story has been told. The actress was nervous in the beginning but the shooting was great fun.

Sudipta Chakraborty will be seen playing Reshmi in the film. She is one of the three witches of Macbeth. She is a woman from UP. She is married to a family living in Kolkata. Her softest corner is her daughter Abantika.

Kamaleswar Mukherjee mentioned that the director loves him a lot and he casts Kamaleswar in his films. He plays a producer who is connected with the underworld. The character he has played has multiple shades and the audience will tell whether he has done justice to the role, revealed Kamaleswar.

Koneenica said after the shoot was completed, she felt that she will be missing her family. The film’s unit became like a family to her during the shoot. She praised the director for organizing the shoot in such a diligent manner.

Sayantani will be seen in a negative character named Chumki in the film. “This is the first work after lockdown and hence this has a special place in my heart. Since I play a negative role, a lot of effort has been done on my look and it will surely interest the audience. Eleven actresses have acted in the film without any problem. The acting by the other actors are superb and the audience must come to the hall to watch the film” said the actress.

The DOP of the film is Indranath Marik. The music of the film will be composed by Ranajoy Bhattacharjee.

The production designer of the film is Nafisa Mondal and the costume will be handled by Poulami Gupta. Aniruddha Chakladar will be in charge of the look for this film.

The film will be released in January 2022.
