At Medica Superspecialty Hospital, a part of Manipal Hospitals Network, Manipal Hospitals East proudly launched the “Plastics Neutral Hospitals” initiative, marking a significant step towards environmental sustainability in collaboration with the CII West Bengal Healthcare Taskforce and MAGPET Polymers Pvt. Ltd. By installing sensor-enabled SmartReBins that encourage responsible plastic waste management, this initiative seeks to turn hospital campuses into plastic-neutral areas.

The launch, which took place at the Medica Superspecialty Hospital (a part of Manipal Hospitals Network), marked the beginning of a new era in sustainable healthcare, where environmental stewardship and technology coexist. Manipal Hospitals has always been at the forefront of bringing about constructive changes in the healthcare system, and this endeavour reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to sustainability and the welfare of the general public.

When the PET bottle-shaped, geo-tagged SmartReBins are full, advanced built-in sensors notify the central system for collection. These containers are not intended to be moved or stolen. This enables the hospital to track the quantity of plastic that is kept out of landfills and aids in the timely and effective collection of plastic waste. Magpet Polymers will transform the gathered PET bottles into premium recycled materials that will be incorporated into a circular economy.

The project also links waste pickers with the waste collection process in a novel and socially inclusive way, giving them significant employment opportunities and incorporating them into the official recycling ecosystem. In addition to receiving plastic neutrality credits for their participation in this program, Manipal Hospitals will also be recognised for their environmental stewardship efforts.

The goal of the healthcare task force, MAGPET Polymers, and the CII West Bengal State Council is to recycle plastic materials and bottles in the healthcare industry in order to lower carbon emissions and promote less landfilling of these plastic bottles which poses a threat to the ecosystem. They are swearing to create a greener planet, a greener community, and a greener way of life through this initiative.
