Porobashi To Take Viewers Back To The Turbulent 1960s

Against the backdrop of the volatile 1960s, a period marked by upheaval and loss, comes the new Bengali feature film Porobashi. Directed by Monet Roy Saha, the film features a powerhouse ensemble cast and promises to be a poignant exploration of history, humanity, and the search for a home.
The film stars a talented lineup including Loknath Dey, Kinjal Nanda, Debpratim Dasgupta, Swati Mukherjee, and Sabuj Bardhan, supported by several other prominent actors. Produced by Anil Debnath under the banner of Purba Diganta Film Production, the film has already completed its shooting phase and is moving toward its highly anticipated release.

The odyssey of Porobashi begins in the erstwhile East Pakistan (modern-day Bangladesh) during the 1960s—a terrifying era of religious persecution. Nimai, a former freedom fighter, is forced to flee to India with his family in search of safety. However, tragedy strikes mid-journey when his young daughter, Ashima, goes missing—an event that alters the family’s destiny forever.
Seeking refuge in Tripura, Northeast India, the family finds shelter in a tribal village led by Puniram. As Nimai begins teaching local children, the family slowly integrates into their new surroundings. However, the peace is fragile. The plot thickens when Nimai’s son, Atul, falls in love with and marries Puniram’s daughter, Phulmati, complicating the delicate social fabric between the two communities.

As the influx of refugees from East Pakistan continues, the local tribal population grows anxious over demographic shifts. This tension, fueled by the violence of misguided youths, leads to a deepening chasm between the two groups.
In a cruel twist of fate, Nimai eventually reunites with his long-lost daughter, only to find her living in Bangladesh as Ashima Begum. Rather than a joyous reunion, this encounter becomes a profound psychological tragedy, centering on the agonizing conflict of identity.

The friction between the migrants and the indigenous community eventually takes a bloody turn. Through a series of devastating events, Nimai’s world crumbles, leaving him—once again—on an uncertain path in search of a new sanctuary.
The film’s emotional resonance is heightened by a soulful soundtrack:
- Music Direction: Amit Chatterjee
- Cinematography: Jayesh Nair
- Playback Singers: Shaan, Iman Chakraborty, Mekhla Dasgupta, and Ikshita.

Porobashi is set to hit the silver screen on February 20th. It stands as a tribute to the resilient human spirit, woven into the complex tapestry of history and emotion.
