Santanu, a 35-year-old Howrah resident, developed uncontrollable high blood pressure and sought medical attention. He had a bicuspid (two leaflets) valve instead of a tricuspid (three leaflets) valve, according to investigations. The tricuspid aortic valve is found in every human being. Apart from that, his aorta’s CT angiography revealed coarctation (congenital narrowing). Many hospitals refused to operate on him because of the procedure’s complexity. After that, he was transferred to Apollo Multispecialty Hospitals in Kolkata.

Under the supervision of Dr. Bikash Majumdar, Dr. Aftab Khan, Dr. Tamasish Mukherjee, and Dr. Yaman Kalita, he was prepared for the endovascular stenting procedure of his coarctation of the aorta. The aorta is the body’s largest artery, carrying oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Aortic coarctation, or a narrowing of the aorta, causes the heart to work harder to pump blood through it.

Mr. Santanu underwent surgery in February 2022 and is now living a normal life. His condition could have been fatal if he had not been treated, with the risk of stroke and long-term cardiac complications due to high blood pressure. This procedure was carried out under general anesthesia in the cardiac catheter laboratory via the right femoral artery route.

Dr. Bikash Majumdar and Dr. Aftab Khan graced the occasion and highlighted different aspects of coarctation of the aorta and the treatment available.
