School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SAST), Shirpur is the first school of Agriculture under SVKM’s NMIMS. They have started admissions for a four-year professional undergraduate degree B.Sc. (Hons) Agriculture for providing holistic education in agriculture and allied sectors.
In rural areas, agriculture employs around 54% of the population and contributes 17% of the GDP. Students who want to work in this industry will benefit from receiving specific training and skill sets. The School’s targeted strategy is to help agricultural graduates find responsible employment, start their own businesses, and become agricultural scientists, so promoting sustainable farm profitability and the security of rural residents’ livelihoods. Students who participate in the Rural Agriculture Work Experience program obtain firsthand knowledge of the problems affecting farm sustainability and propose workable solutions.
The curriculum is created in accordance with the ICAR-recommended syllabus to ensure that students are learning in accordance with the national curriculum. The school will soon apply for ICAR accreditation, giving students the same opportunities as those found in other institutions. The curriculum strikes a mix between theory and practice, and all practice sessions are conducted in properly equipped labs or on farms. The students are focused on an agri-business viewpoint and will also be exposed to several research institutes. The students will comprehend the rural context of agriculture and related industries; the socioeconomic circumstances of farmers; and challenges, particularly in relation to the different pests, diseases, and physiological issues that crops and animals must deal with.
The faculty helps the students plan interactive outreach events so they may develop their communication skills and use a variety of information management techniques.
