On the occasion of the commemoration of Satyajit Ray’s Birth Centenary, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has initiated various activities to pay tribute to the legendary filmmaker. Films Division’s National Museum of Indian Cinema in collaboration with the Indian Museum, Ministry of Culture, Kolkata shall have a three-day film festival at the Museum’s Auditorium in Kolkata to celebrate his films. The screening of films made by & on Satyajit Ray shall be held on 2nd 3rd& 4th May 2022, daily from 12:30 pm.

On 2nd May 2022, the films to be shown are Agantuk, Creative Artists of India – Satyajit Ray (directed by B.D. Garga), Sonar Kella, and Rabindranath Tagore, with a small program at 4:30 pm where few noted personalities, associated with Satyajit Ray will be felicitated.

Jalsaghar, Nemai Ghosh – A Ray of Light (directed by Anirban Mitra & Tirtho Dasgupta) Ghare Baire, and Hirak Rajar Deshe will also be screened.

On 4th May 2022, the screening comprises Ganashatru, Music of Satyajit Ray (directed by Utpalendu Chakraborty), Seemabadha, and Inner Eye. The Government of West Bengal’s Pather Panchali, print from the Academy Film Archive’s landmark restoration of the film from negatives nearly lost in a fire, will be the closing film.

The newly restored prints of Hirak Rajar Deshe, Sonar Kella, and Seemabadha, will be screened at the festival. The screenings are free for all.

The Satyajit Ray film festival at Films Division, Mumbai shall begin with the red carpet & inauguration of the Satyajit Ray’s semi-permanent Gallery at the National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC) by Shyam Benegal on 2nd May 2022 at 10:00 AM. It will be followed by the screening of the opening film at the festival Aparajito, directed by Anik Datta, which is the ‘India Premier’.

Furthermore, a panel discussion is scheduled to be held on 4th May 2022 at 4:00 PM. The panel discussion shall be live on NFDC’s official Facebook for all audiences. The panelists will be Shyam Benegal, Barun Chanda, and Shantanu Moitra, and will be moderated by Shankhayan Ghosh.
