Shabana Azmi as Chief Guest at Closing Ceremony of 25th Kolkata International Film Festival
The closing ceremony of 25th Kolkata International Film Festival 2019 was attended by Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, director Goutam Ghose, Shabana Azmi, actors from the Bengali film fraternity along with eminent jury members of the festival.
Shabana Azmi who was the Chief Guest at the festival mentioned that cinema was the mirror of the society and that freedom of this medium must not be stifled.
Spanish movie The Weeping Woman (La llorona) got the Golden Royal Bengal Tiger Award for the Best Film in International Competition of the festival.
The 2019 Guatemalan film directed by Jayro Bustamante was in the International Competition on Innovation in Moving Images section and got Rs 51 lakh and the Golden Royal Bengal Tiger trophy from veteran actress Shabana Azmi at the event.
The Painted Bird, a Czech film got the Best Director award and received Rs 21 lakh as prize money.
The NETPAC Award for Best Film to The Goddess and the Hero directed by Aditya Kripalani.
The Hiralal Sen Memorial Award for Best Film in Indian language went to Mai Ghat Crime No 103-2005 by director Anath Mahadevan.
Amitabh Bachchan could not attend the opening ceremony of 25th KIFF. He had sent a video message in which he conveyed his apology for not attending the event. This video was shown on the closing ceremony. He mentioned in the speech that films should be screened in the theatres first and then it should be displayed on digital media.
