Bundles of worn sarees in the colors red, yellow, green, blue, or pink—made of silk, cotton, or synthetic—have been meticulously cleaned, disinfected, and gift-wrapped to go to their second rightful owner through the “Six Yards & More” project of the Kolkata-based NGO Best Friendz Society.

The ‘Six Yards & more’ project collected 1700 sarees from 12 designated drop-off locations in Kolkata. Numerous professionals from a range of fields, influencers, philanthropists, and educators showed up to give their support for this special cause.

Dance Masseurs Tanni Chowdhuri, Social Activist Sheila Kapoor & Hena Kapoor, Influencers like Adiwitiya Datta Banik,  Bloggers Koninika De & Anindita Roy Sanyal, Educationist Heena Aftab, Sulagna Mukhopadhyay, a translator and interpreter of German to English/Bengali and vice versa and Swati Kheria, a professional story-teller to children for initiating their creative minds, Principal Techno India group Academia Bipasha Das, Director & Principal B.D.  Memorial Mrs Suman Sood, Mrs India Preet Walia, Homemaker Ronita Mukherjee & Yatchna Lakhotia, Home cooks Shirin Ekbal & Benazir Asgar, Pet lovers  Shukla B Hazra & Shahin Khan, Author Mahtab Jabeen and many more were part of this initiative.

Before the collection is given to less fortunate women throughout the State of West Bengal, it is separated, cleaned, and sanitized.

These women are elderly residents from all communities, widows, orphans, and members of the underprivileged. They also assist transwomen.

According to Sheila Kapoor, Honorary Advisory to the NGO, since its founding on April 14, 2024, “Six Yards & more” has amassed over 1700 sarees. These have found their way into the homes of people who can’t even afford to buy one, let alone a few, on any given special occasion.

By the end of this year, collecting 3300 sarees is the goal.

NGOs like Radha Meera Charitable Trust, Peace in Unity, Samridhhi Foundation, and Junaid Education Foundation, Kolkata have also taken up the task and donated whole-heartedly to the cause.

Celebrating Six Yards & More, the Launch of the Music Album Prerna presented by  Vedatronics & Best Friendz Society together and the  Summer Party Makeup by Celebrity Makeup artist Bivas Jana were some of the highlights at the event.

A grand initiative for the less fortunate people in our society.
