The first facility in West Bengal and eastern India to successfully conduct Stemless Total Shoulder Arthroplasty (TSA) is Narayana Hospital in Howrah. This marks a key milestone in joint replacement surgery in the region and represents a significant improvement for orthopaedic care in Eastern India.

This innovative, bone-preserving shoulder replacement surgery was performed by Dr. Vivek Sharma, Consultant – Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement Surgery, Narayana Hospital, Howrah.

By replacing the injured shoulder joint without the use of a conventional lengthy stem in the upper arm bone, stemless TSA is a state-of-the-art surgical method. Instead, screws are used to secure the implant directly to the metaphyseal bone, minimizing bone loss and simplifying any necessary revision procedures in the future. For individuals with complicated shoulder conditions, including post-traumatic arthritis or prior implants, it provides greater flexibility.

Ameena Khatun, the patient, had advanced avascular necrosis (grade 4), which caused her to have excruciating pain and limited shoulder movement. Lifting a glass of water and other traditional tasks had become uncomfortable. Following a comprehensive evaluation using 3D CT and X-rays, the team decided on a stemless shoulder replacement. Minimal bone cutting, less blood loss, and a single screw positioned at a 132° angle were all part of the procedure. By the third week following surgery, the patient’s right shoulder was significantly more mobile, and she was able to return to light daily activities.
