UNICEF and Nityananda Janavani organized a press meet in Kolkata to celebrate the success of Nityananda Janavani 91.2 FM, a community radio in Purulia district.

The community radio have effectively created awareness on child rights and reached out to more than one lakh and fifty thousand tribal people.

Mohammad Mohiuddin (UNICEF), Nasir Ateeq (UNICEF), Nirmalya Mukherjee (MANT), Moumita Dastidar (UNICEF) and others graced the press meet.

The event was also attended by local tribal community’s volunteers who are the main people behind the success story of the community radio.

The volunteers of Nityananda Janavani have created a bank of radio episodes of over 500 hours and have been sustaining this initiative without any financial support from UNICEF and have mobilized resources locally with their own efforts.

Nityananda has been producing radio programmes in Santhali and Kurmali, besides Bengali, which are spoken by the communities around.

With the help of this community radio, the local communities have integrated their insights, experiences and local knowledge in their programs.
