Supriyo-Sengupta

Supriyo Sengupta is an engineer by profession who has been working in the private sector for many years. He is also a passionate elocutionist who has conceptualized, produced, and performed the excerpts from Shri Shri Chandi, popularly known as ‘Mahishahura Mardini’ (that is telecasted by Akashbani Kolkata on the dawn of Mahalaya every year) in English.

His motto is to spread the message of the play to everyone worldwide.

Supriya learned to read Shri Shri Chandi from his uncle in his childhood. Since then, he has performed this at many public gatherings.  But in 2009, when his mother, Snigdhita Sengupta was detected with cancer he started finding solace in Shri Shri Chandi and thought of sharing the power and strength of this book with the world. Later, after the demise of his mother in 2010, the work paused for a while. Supriya restarted the work in 2013 and completed the entire work after four years of relentless effort in 2017.

Supriyo came up with the English version of ‘Mahisashura Mardini’ so that the entire world understands the greatness of the cultural heritage of Inda. The killing of Mahisashur depicts the win of good over evil. This is an eternal truth. This is a story that can make everyone across the globe feel connected and motivated.

This is a completely non-commercial effort put together to promote the cultural heritage of India and Shri Shri Chandi. The rhythm of the ‘Chandipath’, the way ‘Chandi’ should be read has been honored and maintained. The translation of Chandi from the original Sanskrit /Bengali to English has been done by Nirmal Chandra Saha, an octogenarian and former teacher of English. The dance and choreography are by Jayasree Sengupta.

The complete play is available on YouTube for free in several parts. The link is – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgApQyzylmU
