“The Relation Between A Director and A Cinematographer Is Like Husband And Wife”- Exclusive Interview of Cinematographer Tuhin Dasgupta
Young cinematographer Tuhin Dasgupta has been doing small assignments before he landed up with the job of the cinematographer for director Indranil Banerjee’s mini horror series 4 Shades of Leap. The Kolkata Mail correspondent Priyanka Dutta caught up with the talented cinematographer about his experience of working in the horror mini-series. Excerpts…
This is your first work with Unity Pictures. How did Indranil approach you for the work?
Tuhin Dasgupta- Actually, I approached Indranil for the work. I have been observing his work and he has been doing a great job. So I wanted to work with him as an observer or something of the kind so that I can learn from him. He took it positively and while we were discussing projects, the idea came that winter is about chills and thrills. So we developed the idea of 4 Shades of Leap. I helped him a bit with the screenplay and I did the cinematography. Other than that as you all know, he did the rest of the thing for the film- be it editing or composing the music or so on. We have put in a lot of effort and we hope that the audience will like it.
What was the brief that Indranil gave to you about the film?
Tuhin Dasgupta- He threw light on some topics about which I did not have any idea. I did different kind of cinematography when I shot for shoots or any events. But this was different. So he helped me with that. Other than that, he gave me immense freedom so that I could do the job using my own ideas. Even if we fought, we fought to make the film a better one. This we both understood and that helped in the making of the film. He is a good friend, a teacher and a director as well. I hope this understanding stays in the future too.
What was the challenge that you faced while shooting the mini horror series?
Tuhin Dasgupta- Well, I took care of the lights as lighting is very important in horror series. Whatever other problems or challenges we faced during the shoot, we solved them by simply discussing them and improvising on the spot.
The first episode received a good feedback. What are your expectations from the other episodes?
Tuhin Dasgupta- We hope that the audience will watch the episodes and also like them. The likes may be slow in our channel but the number is continuously increasing and that proves that the audiences have loved the work that we have out up for them.
What is next in line for you as a cinematographer?
Tuhin Dasgupta- I will like to continue to work with Indranil as I got to learn a lot from him. I have just started and I may not get big offers at the moment. But I will like to continue with whatever work I get and enhance my learning.
Wishing Tuhin all the best!! Muri Ghonto which is the third episode of the horror series will be aired today at 8 pm on the official channel of Unity Pictures.
