The Westin Kolkata Rajarhat brings to mind the last nawab of the Kingdom of Awadh, Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, who is credited with bringing the Urdu culture and delectable Awadhi cuisine to Kolkata. On January 8, 2023, to commemorate Nawab Wajid Ali Shah’s 200th birthday, Shahanshah Mirza, the great-grandson of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, and The Westin Kolkata Rajarhat have carefully designed a series of soirees and Awadhi cuisine.

This is the only time in history that Shaam-e-Awadh has been held in honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Wajid Ali Shah. A series of live acts that allow attendees to experience the rich Urdu culture will open the great event.

The evening starts with a graceful Kathak performance by Nandini Sinha, an eminent Lucknowi Gharana-style Kathak exponent. The elegant Kathak performance is followed by Mehfil-e-Tarannum, also known as Dastangoi, a soulful poetry performance directed by Askari Naqvi. Atif Ali Khan, the great-grandson of the doyen of Indian Classical music, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, singer of Kasur Gharana, will enchant the audiences with his nostalgic Ghazal and Hindustani classical performance.

In commemoration of the birth anniversary celebration, Awadhi Begum Sheeba Iqbal and Chef Shafiqun along with the talented culinary team of The Westin Kolkata Rajarhat will showcase a spread of Awadhi cuisine with dishes like ‘Kakori Kebab’, ‘Mutton Nihari’, ‘Seekh kebabs’, ‘Ghutwan kabab’,  ‘Yakhni Pulao’, ‘Ulte Pulte’, ‘Sagpaita with Ghee Chawal’ ‘Qiwami Seewai’, ‘Tali gobhi ka salaan’ to name a few.

Honoring the great NawabWajad Ali Shah on his 200th Birthday anniversary, The Westin Kolkata Rajarhathas come up with a one-of-a-kind week-long Jashn-e-Awadh Food Festival at Seasonal Taste. Patrons can delve into flavorful delicacies like ‘Kakori kebabs’, ‘Awadhi Biryani’, ‘Sheermal’, and ‘Thandai’. The guests can also savor the live stations of ‘Kebabs and Galawati’, ‘Kulcha Nihari’, and ‘Awadhi chaat corner’ which are prepared using distinct cultures and inventive cooking techniques by Chef Sheeba and Chef Shafiqun.
