A two day carnival titled Rang Matir Panchali -2019 was organized at Kumartuli to celebrate World Art Day. It was a celebration of artistry of ornate idol makers of Kumartuli.

The new Avatar of Kumartuli welcomed the Bengali New Year as this year both World Art Day and Bengali New Year were on the same day.

Asian Paints Limited presented this “Rang Matir Panchali – 2019” and the concept of the carnival was pitched in by Mr. Sabyasachi Chatterjee (Managing Partner Creocraft), to the artisans.

This creative rendezvous brought together more than 30 artisans of Kumartuli, the students of Art College, three inmates of Pavlov Mental Hospital, who have already proved their mettle in art space and also the renowned Durga Puja theme makers Sushanta Pal and Partha Dasgupta as the mentors.

The exhibit included creation of traditional artists of Kumartuli, open air installation, graffiti, street art, sculptures, and paintings and also a short film. The traditional art form combined itself with modern art and constructed a platform for a design dialogue between age old idol making process and art of different medium and forms.

The three major lanes of Kumartuli locality have underwent a vibrant and colourful makeover to set the mood of the celebration.
