What Happens When Obstructive Sleep Apnea Is Undiagnosed?

Dr. Sourav Das, Senior Consultant Sleep Medicine Specialist, Somnos Sleep Clinic, Kolkata and Regional Coordinator For World Sleep Day (World Sleep Society) and Secretary, Calcutta Sleep Society and Dr. Uttam Agarwal, President, Calcutta Sleep Society and Sleep Apnea and ENT Surgeon, Orange Sleep Apnea Clinic and Belle Vue Clinic attended a session on the diverse phenotypes of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) based on gender, age and geography.
The doctors highlighted that untreated and undiagnosed OSA can lead to serious health issues like diabetes, cardiovascular disease and impaired cognitive function. Early diagnosis and tailored treatment approaches can help to reduce these risks.
The theme of World Sleep Day 2025 is on Make Sleep-Health a Priority. As a result, focus on quality sleep is more important than ever.
With great advancement made in sleep medicine, distinct OSA phenotypes have been identified. Some of them are Positional OSA, REM-OSA, Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome (OHS), Overlap Syndrome and Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS). All these need personalized treatments for patients.
With more awareness, improved screening programs and accessible treatment options, the burden of sleep disorders in India can be reduced.
