This devotional anecdote starts with the story of a young, affectionate girl named Chodki, who will soon turn 18 years old. She lives in the village of Bankapasi with her brother Gopal and his wife Rasomoyee. The only child of Gopal and Rasomoyee, “Kadam,” is Chodki’s primary helper with daily tasks and nightly activities, as well as her covert companion at night.

One day the village head declares that “Chodki” and her entire family will be excluded from using the community’s common water system for daily needs and will have to endure scarcity and drought if she doesn’t get married before turning eighteen. Young “Chodi” was returning to her house after carrying water from the far end of the hamlet when she unknowingly freed Maa Shitala from an inanimate stone object that had been there since the beginning of time. This was a unique and fascinating turn in the story.
